My Teaching Philosophy

About me

I have been educating maths in Box Head since the winter of 2009. I genuinely adore training, both for the happiness of sharing maths with students and for the opportunity to review older material and also improve my very own knowledge. I am certain in my ability to instruct a range of basic programs. I believe I have actually been reasonably efficient as a teacher, that is confirmed by my favorable student reviews along with lots of unrequested praises I have obtained from trainees.

The goals of my teaching

According to my feeling, the 2 major sides of mathematics education are development of practical problem-solving abilities and conceptual understanding. Neither of them can be the single focus in an effective maths course. My goal being an educator is to achieve the ideal equity between the 2.

I believe a strong conceptual understanding is utterly needed for success in a basic mathematics program. Several of the most gorgeous suggestions in mathematics are simple at their core or are developed on original approaches in straightforward ways. One of the targets of my training is to reveal this clarity for my students, to both raise their conceptual understanding and minimize the frightening element of mathematics. An essential concern is that the beauty of maths is commonly at probabilities with its strictness. For a mathematician, the ultimate recognising of a mathematical outcome is generally supplied by a mathematical proof. However trainees usually do not feel like mathematicians, and hence are not always equipped to take care of this kind of matters. My work is to distil these suggestions to their essence and explain them in as easy way as I can.

Pretty frequently, a well-drawn picture or a brief decoding of mathematical expression into layperson's terminologies is the most helpful method to communicate a mathematical theory.

My approach

In a typical initial mathematics course, there are a number of skill-sets which students are anticipated to be taught.

It is my belief that students usually understand maths most deeply via model. For this reason after introducing any type of new concepts, most of my lesson time is usually spent solving lots of examples. I carefully choose my situations to have enough range to ensure that the students can determine the factors that are usual to each and every from the features that specify to a particular example. When establishing new mathematical strategies, I usually present the topic as though we, as a group, are mastering it mutually. Typically, I will deliver a new type of problem to resolve, discuss any kind of issues that stop former techniques from being used, suggest a different approach to the issue, and after that bring it out to its rational conclusion. I think this particular technique not just involves the students yet enables them through making them a component of the mathematical system rather than merely viewers that are being explained to how they can do things.

As a whole, the analytic and conceptual facets of mathematics supplement each other. A solid conceptual understanding makes the approaches for resolving troubles to look more typical, and therefore much easier to soak up. Having no understanding, students can are likely to view these approaches as mysterious formulas which they must memorize. The more proficient of these trainees may still have the ability to solve these troubles, however the process comes to be useless and is not likely to become maintained once the program is over.

A solid quantity of experience in analytic also constructs a conceptual understanding. Seeing and working through a range of different examples boosts the mental photo that one has of an abstract principle. Thus, my aim is to emphasise both sides of maths as clearly and briefly as possible, so that I maximize the student's potential for success.
